Client Tales: Cyber PR on How to Sell Your Business’ Story

Each business has a story.  The problem is, for some of us, especially in the tech world, we might tell it a little ho-hum. Sometimes you need a little help turning your true story from ho-hum to va-va-voom. That’s where the boutique online PR and social media strategy firm Cyber PR comes in. They help you build a name and a story for yourself within a 12- to 18-month marketing plan, filled with social media and other wow-makers. Now, let’s learn how they do it!

Jen: 
Could you please briefly introduce yourself and tell us what your business is about?

Corie Kellman: Cyber PR® is a boutique online PR and social media strategy firm located in New York, with satellite in Nashville. We connect brands with people who care. I serve as the Director of New Artist Relations, reviewing all incoming project submissions, discussing project goals and expectations and matching artists to the services that will best fit their goals and budget. I discuss the importance of a strong social media and digital strategy and presence.

Cyber PRJen: Why did you start it?

Being on Oprah changed Ariel’s perception of what she was doing for a living and marked the begging of her love affair with social media. In 2002, after running her boutique PR firm for 6 years, her telephone rang. It was the producer from the Oprah Winfrey Show. She had read an article about Ariel’s mother (a self-help author) and wanted to interview Ariel, the entrepreneurial daughter. The next week the film crew arrived. I was told that the show would cover “generational difference in the workplace”, but when the show aired, it was marketed as “a revealing look at what younger women think about older women,” pitting Ariel (and the other daughters interviewed) agains their mothers and she learned an important lesson: In mass media you have NO control. The producers had a story they wanted to tell (whether it be the truth or not) and they caked on her makeup and sat Ariel for hours under hot lights until the crew got the EXACT sentence they wanted, which they fed to her to say.  Ariel knew there had to be a way for artists, brands and thought leaders to have a medium to have more control over their messaging to their audience, and Cyber PR® was born. Through online PR and social media, our clients can tell their story and build relationships with their audiences, with two-way conversations.

I joined the Cyber PR® team early 2013.  I spent a long time following a career path that I thought was the ‘responsible’ thing to to do. After finding what was considered success within that industry, I was not personally fulfilled – I was not passionate about what I was doing and decided to make a change. I wanted to work with musicians and artists and at Cyber PR® we get to assist these creatives with building their fan base, which is an incredible thing to be a part of.

Jen: What makes it unique?

We focus on niche markets that make sense for the client’s brand. We understand the value in long-tail blog and social media engagement. We encourage our clients to tell their own stories and place these signature pieces on blogs, establishing them as a thought leader in the space and introducing them to a new fan base of established online readers.  This helps to develop tribe-members – long terms, engaged fans who care as much as you (and we) do about the brand.

Jen: 
What do you love about being an entrepreneur?


I like the freedom to make and break rules. When you work for a larger company it’s harder to see your impact or be able to change as quickly as the world around you does.  Working at a boutique agency, with a small (but powerful) team, allows us all to see our value, collectively and individually.

Jen: How do you envision success?

Success means something different to everyone. I envision success as being able to support your lifestyle and love what you do. It’s not  necessarily measured in numbers.

Jen: How did you hear about Quote Roller?

We heard about Quote Roller from our dear friends and app designers at 12South Music!  We loved their proposal so much we asked them how they did it!

Jen: How does Quote Roller help your business?


We love the feature that allows us to track when and how long our clients are reading the proposal. It gives us the opportunity to know when to follow up (and if it may have gotten lost in their inbox). Prior to Quote Roller, we were using PDF attachments and it wasn’t always clear if a client received or reviewed the services.

We just had a great year and we thank QR for helping to keep our team organized: I work from Nashville and our headquarters is in Brooklyn.
