Client Tales: Zlien is Your Smart Way to Lien

Without further ado, let’s meet Scott Wolfe, Zlien CEO, who gives a great tour of the company and explains how Quote Roller helps Zlien everyday.

Sasha Kovaliov: Could you please briefly introduce yourself and tell us what your business is about?

Scott Wolfe: Zlien makes the mechanics lien process simple, helping suppliers, subcontractors and others in the construction industry secure their accounts receivables by filing mechanics lien claims. Zlien provides financial services to the construction industry by solving the problem with mechanics lien and preliminary notice compliance. We monitor and manage mechanics lien and preliminary notice needs for our clients on projects across the country, which decreases their risk of non-payment and increases their ability to extend credit to more customers.

As for me, I’m a former construction attorney who saw the need to solve a legal problem for folks in the construction industry. My law firm lives on without me (www.wolfelaw.com), as my focus is now on Zlien.

SK: Why did you start it? What makes it unique? 

SW: We started Zlien in 2008. The service is unique because it leverages technology to solve complex compliance requirements in the mechanics lien and bond claim space. While mechanics liens and bond claims are an integral part of any construction company’s credit policy, the legal requirements to qualify and enforce these claims differ from state-to-state and project-to-project. Generally speaking, it’s a compliance nightmare.

Until Zlien, the market lacked a technology that deconstructed these lien laws and made compliance automatic, which highlights another unique Zlien function. In addition to helping companies understand their compliance requirements, Zlien’s system prepares, files and tracks the legal paperwork.

SK: What do you love about being an entrepreneur?

SW: I come from a family of entrepreneurs, and honestly, I don’t know any other way. I love finding market problems and coming up with fixes, and then having everything put together to make that particular fix marketable from sketching out the concept to running the actual business. Steve Jobs once commented on how amazing it was that you can poke life and something will come out on the other side, and that speaks to why entrepreneurs love being entrepreneurs. Everyday brings a new challenge and a business is constantly evolving, but as the entrepreneur  you get to poke around and watch things respond. I love that.

SK: How do you envision success?

SW: Tough question for a customer profile, eh!?

SK: How did you hear about Quote Roller? Why did you decide to try our app?

SW: I’m not sure how I heard about QR to be honest. I think I was actively looking for a way to manage proposals and came across the application through search. I decided to try the app because it looked like a right fit. We needed something to ease the headache of sending proposals.

SK: How does Quote Roller help your business?

SW: Potential clients would request more information from our business – and mayhem would ensue. Keeping track of PDF templates and proposal elements meant our proposals were inconsistent. The manual labor required in constructing and sending a proposal meant we were taking too long. Quote Roller solved these problems. Proposals get out immediately, and the messaging is consistent.

Two huge improvements:

  1. We get out more proposals, which means we reach more customers; and
  2. We convert better.

 

SK: What would you tell your friends about Quote Roller?

SW: Quote Roller is a life saver if you send proposals or quotes as part of your business. The application allows your business to send a higher volume of quotes faster than ever before, and it keeps your company’s messaging consistent across multiple sales documents and multiple users.
