Client Tales: Webics’ Matthew Ozolins on the Speed of Entrepreneurship

Jennifer Riggins: Could you please briefly introduce yourself and tell us what your business is about?

Matthew Ozolins: I’m Matthew, I co-foundered Webics alongside my good friend, Ory Purhonen a few years ago. We are a Web Marketing Agency with a fantastic Australian client base, aiming to be the highest quality supplier in our field. I would say our business is really about building great business relationships with all of our clients and our suppliers, like a cool little community of our own. We have systems in our business that really take a lot of the pressure and confusion out of delivering our services for our clients and ourselves, so we have the time to take a hands-on approach to making sure our clients are learning along the way and loving Webics more each day.

Jen: Why did you start it? What makes it unique?
Matthew: The beginning of Webics was a very opportunistic and entrepreneurial time. Ory and I were both young with time on our hands and a set of unique skill sets that complemented each other. We didn’t actually know each other very well when we started. I was working on my first online business venture and Ory had already started building the original Webics infrastructure and got a few hosting and web design clients on board. Ory sent me a cold email trying to sell me a website, we got talking and somehow ended up in this position. It is all kind of a blur because we went from not knowing each other to building real momentum and experiencing the entrepreneurial spirit together in a very short period of time. It was cool.

I think our business is really unique, despite the fact that our industry is totally flooded. Our 100 percent transparent approach to Web Design is awesome. Rather than convincing the client to go in blind and just trust us, we let them pick the WordPress theme before implementing all of their branding and content. This is so much easier to systemize on our end and our clients absolutely love it. With this system in place, we are are choosing a design with the client and explaining a very simple process, while all the competitors are pitching hard. Because of this, we close more deals, close deals faster, get websites finished faster and have happier and more trusting clients. Remember how I said we aim for good client relationships? Winning trust like this in the beginning is a big part of making that happen.

Jen: What do you love about being an entrepreneur?
Matthew: I love being limited and restricted only by what my mind can conceive, and there are not a lot of limits up there. My mind is kind of a free-for-all and I love turning wacky ideas into reality. I think the way in which I have shaken the Web Design industry up is a good example of that. Another good example is that Ory and I had a vague vision of our ability to run our business remotely from the Whitsundays in Tropical North Queensland (Australia.) In a moment of frustration with the cold climate and our boring office late at night, we decided we were going to take the leap and moved less than a week later. We could not have done that if we were not fearless entrepreneurs. Being an entrepreneur and building a great company is kind of like being a total lunatic except your parents are proud of you. I love that I am obsessed with my work, it is pretty much all I think about with the exception of a few other things. I never really feel like I am working for myself. It is more of a team effort between Ory and I, our staff and our clients to be a part of something we are all proud of. I think the main thing I love about being en entrepreneur is that I can only kick goals and get what I want out of my business and my life by helping my clients kick goals and get what they want first. That’s awesome.
Jen: How do you envision success?
Matthew: I find success and fulfillment in my journey when I stop chasing success like a Golden Snitch, and start trying to create awesome situations in which our clients are happy with a job well done and we can really see how we have helped them. When you do that, you will get where you want to go without the internally depressing pressure of thinking about your own desires as the be-all and end-all.

Matthew: I knew Webics was spending way to much time writing proposals. I was so stupid, we needed a better system. We had a couple of PDF templates for a while, which still took too much time and was not really able to be managed. I think I just Googled the right phrase to see if there were any totally online solutions. I came across Quote Roller and one other. I read a bunch of bad reviews for the other company and read a bunch of great Quote Roller reviews. Now, here I am.
Jen: How does Quote Roller help your business?
Matthew: It saves time. So, so much time. Plus, we win way more deals than we used to, which is awesome. It is just so professional. We have a way better handle on managing our sales pipeline now.
Jen: What would you tell your friends about Quote Roller?
Matthew: Trust me, my love for Quote Roller is no secret. I have blogged about it, sent email campaigns to my own list about it, personally told a bunch of my friends in business and clients that is it worth investing in. I am a little Australian Quote Roller ambassador. “Quote Roller is not for everyone, just the businesses that want to make more money.”
Jen: Have you seen any winning rate increases? Any other delightful numbers?
Matthew: I can’t remember the exact figure but I do know the trend that began when we started using Quote Roller was us doubling revenue every 3 months. There were a couple of other systemization factors involved with that growth but Quote Roller was what gave us the concept of even using systems to make things easier.
